My name is Steffen Kreft , I am an animation film director, illustrator, marionette maker and puppeteer. I was born in Münster, Germany and am currently living in a small town in New Zealand called Greytown.
When I first moved to New Zealand in 2007, I did my Masters in design at Massey University and co-founded the animation company National Park Studios in 2010. I taught design, animation and puppet making at tertiary institutions (Massey University and The Learning Connexion). In 2012, I directed and organised the Greytown Arts Festival and directed and made marionettes for the adult puppet show The Kitchen at the End of the World. In 2014 my partner William and I moved to Berlin for a few years where we started the popular animated web series Lifeswap about the cultural differences between New Zealand and Germany.
Now, I spend my time making short films for organisations like the French/German TV channel Arte, several New Zealand ministries, German museums and start-up companies or create giant puppets for festivals. I am also building a beautiful tiny house on wheels – my most creatively challenging as well as satisfying project yet.
I have a passion for making things with my hands and while my projects are so varied, I am proud of the attention to detail that is obvious in all of my work.
